BROADSIDE GG
UI Designer
Brief
I created a HUD and UI system for Broadside, a first-person shooter inspired by the Tribes franchise. Broadside takes place in a future ruled by the Imperium a Roman Empire that never fell and now dominates the galaxy. Combat is fast, brutal, and ritualistic, with gladiators fighting for honor using outdated but devastating weapons of war. My goal was to design an interface that felt ancient and ceremonial, yet clear and responsive in a high-speed arena. Every piece of the HUD was built to feel like it belonged in a world where tradition and destruction go hand in hand.
Challenge
How can I design a game interface that feels immersive and atmospheric, while still being clear and responsive enough to support fast-paced competitive gameplay?
Gaming HUD
By combining narrative-driven worldbuilding with fast-paced FPS gameplay, I designed a HUD and UI system that feels immersive, ceremonial, and functional. Set in a future where the Roman Empire never fell, Broadside blends ancient tradition with sci-fi warfare and the interface needed to reflect that. I pulled visual inspiration from imperial iconography, carved stone, and battlefield relics to create something that felt heavy, worn, and symbolic. I focused on balancing visual atmosphere with gameplay clarity, ensuring that health, ammo, and objectives were always readable without breaking immersion. I also created animations, HUD states, and mockups across various game modes to explore how the system would scale in different combat scenarios.
Reflection
I had a lot of fun experimenting in this new industry of UI’s doing many tasks that I wasn’t familiar with. Transitioning from web and mobile app design to gaming UI was a challenge, as I had to gather references, analyze them, and determine what was both visually appealing and functional. If these prototype layouts are still in the game by the official release date, I would love the opportunity to do some extensive user research and fix potential issues.
